WEST MANGGARAI, Mangrove Crab Labs – In a strategic move to curb destructive coastal practices, a major environmental conservation initiative has been set in motion for 2026. Crab fishermen and community groups across West Manggarai Regency are now equipped with eco-friendly fishing gear, supplied through a collaborative effort between Mangrove Crab Labs and the Indonesian Youth Conservation Foundation (YAPERSI).
The equipment aid was distributed directly to three specific coastal areas: Nanga Kantor Barat Village, Tanjung Boleng Village, and Nanga Lili Village. This initiative is rolled out as a concrete part of YAPERSI’s ongoing agenda to manage marine resources while simultaneously boosting the economic development of local coastal communities.
The handover process went beyond the mere distribution of physical goods. YAPERSI engaged face-to-face with the beneficiary groups, pairing the equipment delivery with comprehensive educational sessions.
During these sessions, the communities were given in-depth insights into sustainable crab harvesting techniques. Furthermore, a strong emphasis was placed on the vital importance of preserving the mangrove ecosystem, which serves as the primary habitat for the mangrove crab population.
Through the provision of this environmentally conscious gear and educational outreach, it is highly anticipated that destructive fishing practices will be significantly reduced. Ultimately, this intervention is designed to ensure that fishermen can steadily increase their yields without compromising the future of the mangrove habitats or the sustainability of the crabs themselves.
